The detail.
Polyfab Parasol is a commercial-grade knitted shade cloth made for tension structures and other heavy-duty use. A blend of high-density monofilament and tape gives it a high degree of protection from UV radiation — up to 95% UVR block, depending on colour — and it is UV stabilised, abrasion resistant and fire retardant to AS 1530 Part III.
The cloth is heat set before rolling so it lays flat and holds its shape once tensioned. Edges are hemmed with webbing and every seam is sewn in PTFE thread, which does not disintegrate in the sun. A rope mounting kit comes with every sail; the matching stainless fixing kits are listed below.

A sail lasts when it is tensioned properly. Take your time with the measuring — it is the part that decides how the sail sits for the next ten years.
- Choose your fixing points. Fascia beams, posts, masonry or steel — each corner needs something solid enough to take the pull of a tensioned sail in wind. If you are not sure a point will hold, ask us before you order.
- Measure between them. Measure fixing point to fixing point along each edge, not the ground below. The sail is made smaller than that span to leave room for the hardware.
- Allow for the hardware. Between each sail corner and its fixing point there is a turnbuckle, a shackle or hook, and the pad eye. Leave a gap on every corner for them; the rope kit supplied covers the rest of the distance.
- Vary the heights. Set at least one corner higher than the others so rain runs off rather than pooling in the middle of the sail.
- Fit the pad eyes, then the sail. Fix the pad eyes first. Attach the sail corners with the shackles or hooks, then take up the slack evenly with the turnbuckles, working corner to corner, until the cloth is drum tight with no flapping edges.

Parasol shade cloth needs very little looking after.
- Hose the sail down when it collects dust or leaves. For marks, use a soft brush and a mild detergent in cold water, then rinse well.
- Never pressure-wash the cloth or use bleach, solvents or abrasive cleaners — they attack the UV stabiliser and the thread.
- Check the tension after the first few weeks and again each season. A sail that has gone slack flaps in the wind, and flapping is what wears a sail out.
- In storm season, or if you are away over winter, take the sail down and store it dry. It goes back up in an afternoon.
Polyfab Parasol shade cloth carries a ten-year manufacturer’s warranty against UV degradation, and the PTFE thread every sail is sewn with carries the same ten years.
The warranty covers the fabric and the stitching. It does not cover damage from storms or high wind, from a sail left slack, from incorrect fixing points or hardware, or from chemicals, abrasion or fire.
