Five steps from a bare patio to a tensioned sail. Read it once, measure twice, and you’ll know exactly which stock size to order.

Choose your fixing points

Each corner needs something solid enough to take the pull of a tensioned sail in wind: a fascia beam, a post, masonry or steel. Not sure a point will hold? Ask us before you order.
Measure between them

Measure fixing point to fixing point along each edge, not the ground below. The sail is made smaller than that span to leave room for the hardware.
Allow for the hardware

Between each sail corner and its fixing point sit a turnbuckle, a shackle or hook, and the pad eye. Leave a gap at every corner for them; the rope kit supplied with every sail covers the rest. Pick the stock size that fits inside your measurements with that gap, or ask about a custom size.
Vary the heights

Set at least one corner higher than the others so rain runs off rather than pooling in the middle.
Fit the pad eyes, then the sail

Fix the pad eyes first. Attach the corners with the shackles or hooks, then take up the slack evenly with the turnbuckles, corner to corner, until the cloth is drum tight with no flapping edges. Check the tension again after the first few weeks.

Sizes are the finished sail edge to edge. Your fixing points need to be further apart than this to leave room for the hardware.

What if I'm not sure a fixing point will hold?

Send us a photo. If it’s timber, masonry or steel and you can get a solid fixing into it, it will usually do; a fence panel or gutter won’t.

Can I fix to a fence or a wall?

A brick or block wall, yes, with the right masonry anchors. A timber fence post, only if it’s set in concrete and you fix near the top. Fence palings and gutters never.

Will rain pool on the sail?

Not if at least one corner sits lower than the others so water runs off. A flat sail will pool.

Which kit do I need?

The attachment kit has the turnbuckles and shackles to tension a sail onto fixing points you already have. The fixing kit adds the pad eyes and hooks for new fixing points.

How tight is tight enough?

Drum tight, with no flapping edges, and tensioned evenly corner to corner. Re-check after the first few windy weeks; new cloth settles.
